‘Anti-forestalling’ measures that were announced early this year and would have applied from 6 June 2014 have been withdrawn in the recently published draft Finance Bill 2015.

Earlier this week, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) issued its discussion document on the tax relief that temporary workers claim on travel and subsistence expenses, typically where they are employed by an umbrella business. The document had been anticipated following an announcement in the Autumn Statement. The closing date for comments is 10 February 2015, which means that there is little time for meaningful consultation given that the government wishes to take informed action in next year’s Budget.

HM Revenue & Customs’ (HMRC’s) latest targeted crackdown on under-paid tax has solicitors in its sights (previous campaigns have targeted health and wellbeing professionals, plumbers and electricians, amongst others). HMRC says it has already collected almost £1 billion as a result of its various campaigns.
