GOV.UK One Login, which is being rolled out across a whole range of government services, is now in the process of gradually switching millions of HMRC taxpayers from its previous Government Gateway platform to a new single login system, a transition which over time will allow access to other services such as the DWP and DVLA.
Since its inception in 2001, more than 50 million accounts have been registered on the Government Gateway scheme. The plan is that these will be migrated to the new One Login service through which HMRC taxpayer information will be accessed.
Martyn Dobinson, Partner, and a member of the firm’s Land and Rural Practice Group, says:
“Whilst in theory this should make the service more streamlined to interact with a range of government services it is unlikely that the taxpayer will really notice that much difference, although the new system will allow users to have just one account, one username, one password, and one identity check. Another thing to note is that this will, at least for now, not affect business or organisation logins – only individuals.
“The plan also is that more than 100 government services will be accessible through One Login via phone or computer. We have yet to see a schedule of when various government departments will make the change – and importantly for this sector we don’t yet know if and when the Rural Payments Service (RPS) will be switching over.”
Farmers and landowners registered with Government Gateway still require to be registered separately with the RPS and a reminder was issued earlier this year by GOV.UK for information on individual RPS accounts to be kept up to date.
