Skills shortages discussion

Casidhe Baleri, Partner at Saffery in Bournemouth, took part in the Biz Round Table discussion on combatting skills shortages and working from home.

Casidhe noted some of the difficulties facing businesses at the moment, but gave an optimistic view of their chances.

She said: “We are starting to see a post-Covid impact within our client base. Personally, I think most clients seem to have it under control.

“They’ve been managing to increase their prices just as much as everyone else is, but it’s definitely been challenging. I know from our perspective recruitment and retention has been at the heart of what we’re doing.”

Matt Fretten, Managing Partner at Frettens Solicitors, gave a similarly optimistic but measured view about the resilience of people and businesses.

“What we’ve seen, and it’s been reflected largely in most of our client base, is people have navigated things pretty well,” he said.

“Whilst interest rates going up have impacted on the number of mortgage applications and that kind of thing, actually people have sort of got used to that level of interest rates.

“People as always, and especially SME businesses, have adapted very well. I think a lot is going to come out in the next six to nine months but a lot depends on what happens in the wider world.”
