Not-for-Profit
We are a leading provider of accountancy, tax and advisory services to charities, voluntary organisations and the public sector, including independent schools and livery companies. Our Not-for-Profit Group numbers many household-name charities among its clients.
Our firm also possesses a specialist team of VAT consultants, wholly dedicated to advising not-for-profit organisations, with a strong track record of recovering monies from HM Revenue & Customs on behalf of clients.
An overview of our services are detailed in our Not-for-profit Brochure.
In partnership with the NCVO, the Saffery Champness Charity VAT Team has launched a new service to assist charities with all queries on VAT, Gift Aid and Direct Tax.

Public sector
We provide a wide range of audit, accountancy and business advice to the public sector, including the external audit of a number of public sector organisations. We have significant expertise in auditing government grants financed by EU funds and, as the leading UK experts for one particular stream of EU public sector funding, we run regular workshops to brief both recipients of the funding and those working in the public sector on the intricate rules that need to be applied. We also provide consultancy advice to UK government departments on issues related to EU grant funding.
In addition to external audit work, we are experienced in undertaking internal systems reviews and reviewing financial management and accounting guidance for both UK government departments and other public sector bodies.
How do we differ from the competition?
We are a large enough firm to have the full range of specialist expertise which charities require. But we are also small enough to give each client a high degree of partner involvement. We like to spend time getting to know our clients, understand their issues and help them. This is why our clients come to us and stay with us.
Our National Not-for-Profit Group
Our National Not-for-Profit Group meets regularly to exchange ideas and keep up-to-date on developments in the sector so that we can provide a proactive service for our clients. The group combines charities, tax and VAT specialists from all of our offices to ensure we provide a practical and consistent service nationwide.
We are committed to working within the voluntary sector and demonstrate this by our:
- Cooperation with the main charity umbrella groups to promote the interests of the sector in general. We are active members of the Charity Finance Directors' Group and the Charities' Tax Reform Group, which ensures that we are at the cutting edge of developments in the sector;
- Regular publications including Charities Briefing, Independent Schools Briefing and Livery Company Briefing;
- Charities seminars, including our annual VAT & Charities seminar;
- Free 'health checks' in many areas, such as VAT, taxation and human resources to ensure that charities are managing their affairs effectively; and
- Articles on topical issues in charities publications.
