Josh Eyles is a Biomedical Science graduate from the University of Sheffield. Here he describes his experience as a summer intern at Saffery in High Wycombe.

From a young age, I was drawn to science and maths. I loved how they offered clear logic and problem-solving opportunities. As I explored potential career paths during university, I spent a lot of time attending online courses, conferences and networking events. Speaking to professionals from a variety of fields helped me realise that while I enjoyed the analytical challenges of science, I was particularly drawn to the financial and strategic side of solving complex problems.

That realisation led me to explore the world of accountancy. I was particularly impressed by Saffery, an accountancy firm with a reputation for incredible client service and clear career progression. From trainee to partner, there’s a clear path for growth and that structure really appealed to me. Beyond the professional development, I was drawn to Saffery’s values of excellence, integrity, collegiate, enthusiastic – all of which strongly align with what I believe in.

The firm also stood out because of its charity work and community engagement. For example, its staff and firm have been longstanding supporters of the Heart of Bucks charity. I remember how an associate once spoke highly of the firm, and I can see why – the culture is inclusive and supportive, welcoming people from all backgrounds.

At Saffery, I’m currently focusing on personal tax. The work involves handling a large volume of detailed information, preparing tax packs and drafting tax returns. It’s a steep learning curve, but a fantastic opportunity to learn what clients really want.

My goal as an intern is to deepen my technical understanding of accountancy, become more confident using accountancy software and to build professional, real-world skills.

The transition from university to a professional work environment can be challenging. But here are a few tips that helped me adjust:

  • Ask questions: No one expects you to know everything. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
  • Explore your interests: Try different things and see what resonates with you. When you follow your interests, work starts to feel more like a hobby.
  • Use LinkedIn:  Building a presence and connecting with others in different roles can open up unexpected opportunities.
  • Stay curious: Be open to meeting new people at the firm to learn about the various roles within a company.

So far, one of the biggest highlights has been the firm’s fun day during my first week. We had a team-building boat race (sic. see photo), which we won! It was a great way to really get to know colleagues outside of the office environment.

Social life at the firm is another major perk. We have monthly social events, from visiting our local beer garden to bowling, and I’ve even joined the office football team.

What makes Saffery such a great employer is the balance between high standards and genuine care for their employees and clients. Everyone works hard, but there’s a shared sense of purpose and mutual support. No matter your role, you’re encouraged to ask questions and build relationship with people not just within your office, but across the whole firm. That welcoming culture makes Saffery a standout place to work.
