The government has published details of its Green Homes Grant Scheme, under which it will provide vouchers to help cover the cost of making energy efficient improvements to homes in England.

The improvements covered by the scheme include insulating homes to reduce energy use or installing low-carbon heating to lower the amount of carbon dioxide a property produces.

The scheme will launch at the end of September and vouchers will be issued of up to £10,000. The voucher will cover two thirds of the cost of the work required. Homeowners that successfully apply must redeem their voucher and ensure improvements are completed by 31 March 2021.

Improvements covered by the voucher include the following types of insulation:

  • Solid wall
  • Under floor
  • Cavity wall
  • Loft
  • Flat roof

Improvements not covered, include:

• Building a new extension or conversion to your home
• Insulating a conservatory with no fixed heating
• Installing a new fossil fuel boiler (such as gas, oil or LPG boilers)

Certain improvements are designated ‘primary measures’ and if a homeowner installs at least one of these they may also use their voucher to install designated ‘secondary measures’, which include draught proofing, replacing single glazed windows and installing new heating controls.
