The Breaking Down Barriers to Accountancy project was launched to improve social mobility within the accountancy profession.

As a firm, we’re proud participants of this initiative, spearheaded by the Rt Hon Justine Greening, as it aligns with our ED&I and Responsible Business commitments and ambitions to make sure Saffery and the accountancy sector is not only accessible to everyone, regardless of background, but is an inclusive place where everyone can belong and thrive.

Bringing together accountancy firms and education institutions, the initiative created a space to share ideas and learn from each other. Through a series of workshops focusing on outreach, access, recruitment, and progression, we shared practical ways to break down the barriers many face when thinking about or starting a career in accountancy.

A report detailing the initiative has since been launched in the House of Commons to an audience of professionals, MPs and policymakers. The report shares rich insights and recommendations from the workshops. It highlights the challenges we still face but also celebrates best practices across the sector, including case studies from Saffery, such as contextual recruitment, school outreach, data analysis, and social mobility awareness raising.
