The UK government has announced that it is working with industry bodies to produce a code of conduct to assist lenders, landlords and tenants in negotiating a plan for rental payments that cannot be made as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. The code will be voluntary but the government has indicated it will consider whether elements of it could be enforced.
The announcement also indicates that the government is considering extending some of the measures that are due to expire on 30 June 2020. This includes a moratorium on businesses being forced from their premises due to non-payment of rent.
With June quarter day fast approaching, landlords and tenants should be considering their position and what measures they can take to work together regarding rents due.
