Careers

As a top 20 UK accountancy firm, and advisers to some of the UK’s wealthiest individuals, Saffery Champness is a dynamic and exciting place to launch your career.

Through hard work and innovative thinking – to say nothing of the personal touch which has long been our trademark – we have achieved strong market positions across a range of sectors, but particularly private clients.

Our vision for the future is simple – we wish to be universally recognised as the firm of choice for private clients. You can be instrumental in turning this vision into reality, while learning how to maximise your own professional potential.

School leavers

Our school leaver programme offers an opportunity where you will develop valuable skills, work towards gaining a professional qualification, enjoy challenging hands-on work experience, learn from exceptional people and earn a full-time salary – straight after doing your A Levels.

Whatever path you take, working in a top 20 professional services firm like Saffery Champness will give you the experiences and development opportunities you need to have an exceptional future ahead of you.

Graduates

During your accountancy training you will undertake programmes of external study with high quality tuition providers. Our trainees study with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales (ICAEW), The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Throughout a training contract, which usually lasts for three years, our trainees spend several weeks at college, preparing to sit up to 15 exams.

Interested in joining us?

If you are interested in applying for a training contract at Saffery Champness, the application process has several steps.

1) Complete an online application form. Except in exceptional circumstances, you will need at least a 2:1 at degree level (or predicted) and 300 UCAS points. Make sure your application has no spelling or grammar errors as these will most likely result in an automatic rejection.

2) We will send you a request to complete written numerical and verbal reasoning tests.

3) If the tests go well, a member of our HR team will call you for an initial telephone interview, followed by a short personality questionnaire.

4) Candidates still under consideration at this point will be invited to an assessment day. If you are successful, you will receive an official offer shortly after.

Like much of the industry, we recruit our trainees one year in advance of their actual starting date.

What we can offer you

We want to give you the best possible start to your accountancy career. Our salary and benefits packages are competitive with the top quartile in the industry, while our commitment to top-quality training is equally impressive. In addition to this, the firm is able to offer a joining bonus for our Inverness and Peterborough offices.

Internship opportunities

If you are targeting a career in accountancy but remain unsure about what kind of firm you think would best suit you, one of our summer intern placements will provide you with a good insight. The scheme runs for four to six weeks every summer and provides a valuable insight not just into the workings of a top 20 accountancy firm, but also the unique culture of Saffery Champness.

We understand that entering a new workplace, particularly on a temporary placement, can be an intimidating experience. That is why we go out of our way to make you feel not just welcome, but fully-integrated into the firm, giving you a full induction to help you acclimatise.

As an intern you will be partnered with a dedicated mentor whose job it is to ensure your placement is enjoyable and challenging. During your time with us you will benefit not only from a basic bookkeeping course, but also exposure to different departments within the firm. Your mentor will chart your progress and provide regular feedback during informal appraisals.

Entry criteria

Applicants must have a 2:1 degree (expected or obtained) in any discipline and at least 300 UCAS points, or equivalent, gained at one sitting. Plus excellent GSCE results with a minimum grade B in English and Maths.

Employee testimonials

Lisa Massey

Corporate Tax Supervisor, Tax Department, London

Having previously worked for a Big 4 firm, I'm definitely glad I made the move to Saffery Champness – I've found it to be a much more relaxed working environment where the different parts of the firm work together. My work has been varied and interesting from the start with plenty of direct client contact and opportunities for taking ownership of the work.

Robert Mace

Personal Tax Supervisor, London

My work is very challenging and diverse and I have had fantastic support throughout my professional studies from both my team members and HR. There is a strong work ethic at Saffery's but plenty of time is made for socialising and there is an unstoppable football team!

David Bussey

Audit Manager, Harrogate

I've never had any regrets about joining Saffery's. Training wise you get an interesting variety of clients and very early on, the chance to see some jobs right through to the end. There are plenty of opportunities for career advancement after you become qualified and the chance to specialise in certain areas. Most importantly, the one thing that everyone seems to agree on about Saffery's is how friendly and approachable the people are, even the partners!
